ok parks and rec right:

- has a dark-skinned, fat black woman as the sexy mysterious hottie of the office and it’s not about her “overcoming” anything or anything it’s just a thing, and she’s not “killing men with her sharp eyeliner” or being a bad person at the same time she’s just very confident and she also gets married without losing that (Donna)

- there’s a biracial latina who isn’t all spicy or fiery or remotely stereotypical at all but her heritage and culture aren’t ignored either and her plot line doesn’t center around that (April)

- has a gay guy but there’s no coming out scene or no big stink about it, it just kinda ends up coming up, and he isn’t stereotyped, nor does his story revolve around that (Craig)

- has a depiction of depression that isn’t traditional or stereotypical, especially because the character that gets it is so positive, and shows the character dealing in a healthy way and overcoming it and he’s not reduced to his mental illness and you can see that he is more than that (Chris)

- has an Indian character who deals with racism but is also allowed to be a complete multi-dimensional character with recognizable experiences and qualities separate from that, and also who ends up owning a successful business (Tom)

- there are modern native americans interacting with the people who took their land generations later and exposes some of their issues (Ken Hotate and the Wamapoke)

- shows the bad side of government and the realistic racism, sexism, bureaucracy, etc. that goes on but it also has good hearted candidates who show what good people can do when we believe in them and vote for them (Leslie)

- so much other stuff

there are so many things I adore abt parks and rec but I have got to say, its uncanny ability to take a tried and true character trope, pull out the positive elements and subvert the negative stuff is,,, incredible???

like. lazy deadbeat boyfriend becomes amazing husband and father, still retains his childlike innocence and fun-loving attitude.

super type-a career driven woman is incredibly considerate and kind, learns to slow down and think of others’ ability to keep up and eventually gets married and has three kids, but never once at the cost of her ambitions.

typical angsty youth finds purpose and passion in people she cares about, doesn’t give up her dark sense of humour and is still allowed to dislike interacting with lots of people at once.

uptight male nerd has career goals, a well-rounded social life and is incredibly respectful and supportive of his wife because he is a responsible adult; still writes star trek fanfic in his free time.

capitalist libertarian who insists that everyone is responsible for their own success spends countless hours supporting and encouraging his friends’ dreams, even if they’re in government, without changing his apolitical stance.

and that’s not even the whole cast!!!

everyone remains who they are, maintains the positive elements of many of these old character tropes in a way that only amplifies the humor, but they discard all the bad bits, the negative bits, the toxic bits, instead having complex flaws and real human shortcomings while still all being fundamentally Good People

Leslie suddenly sliding to the floor every few hours when she remembers. she wraps herself in every coat, scarf, and hat she owns and hibernates in there for a day or two
Leslie tackles Jamm in the hall when she comes back to work: “you know what you did!”
Leslie wearing and passing out buttons with the MADD logo “The second D doesn’t stand for anything. Thats just how mad I am.”

Leslie starts to cry for a few minutes and then goes “but you actually voted for Hillary, right?”
The Pawnee Goddesses’ next four years are already booked for visiting political representatives, staging sit-ins, protests, and fundraisers. Ron always drives the bus. Andy is in charge of new recruits. Tom designs uniforms. Ann looks pretty.
Galentines Day becomes a movement and organization dedicated to helping women and they celebrate it every day. Waffle buttons become a symbol of the movement
