say what you like about frozen but the fact is, the second highest grossing animated film ever, now with a golden globe and an emmy behind it, is a film about two sisters, one of whom suffers from tangible depression and anxiety attacks, and the most important relationship is that of their love for each other and i think that’s pretty darn cool
Disney : There is a short film named ‘Frozen fever’ before the Cinderella
Frozen fandom : There is a long bonus film named ‘Cinderella’ after Frozen fever
SO Kristoff was the Achilles’s heel of Frozen
There was nothing WRONG with Kristoff, to say, but he just wasn’t as strong or interesting as the other characters in the film.
Imagine the film without him. All that really changes is how Anna gets from one place to another. Her love story with him didn’t change her as a person in any way, other than the fact that she finally got the romance she sang about in the first half of the movie. Hans was an interesting character whose motives and complexities moved the story forward, but it was Anna and Elsa’s relationship that stole the show.
Honestly, Kristoff didn’t stand a chance compared to the love story between the sisters. Elsa was far more complex, and Anna’s unwavering love for her and need to reach her were so much more engaging than her banter with Kristoff.
I understand the hetero love story is needed for commercial reasons, but I honestly think Kristoff’s story could have been excluded from the film without scaring away viewers. She still had the (failed) love with Hans, and in the end her true love was Elsa, not Kristoff. Imagine a Disney film where Anna falls for Hans, he betrays her,and she finds the truest form of love in her estranged sister. Imagine how original, dynamic, and groundbreaking that would have been.
In Tangled, the love story between Rapunzel and Eugene was what propelled the story forward. In Frozen, it was Anna and Elsa’s. So Kristoff although not BAD didn’t do much for the film as a whole.
I’m far too tired to write an essay on the subject right now, but let me just say this….
Even without the romance plot, Kristoff had a purpose.
Anna wouldn’t have made it half way up those mountains without him before she’d make a mistake or get lost and knowing Anna’s impulsive personality, possibly get herself killed. Her determination can only get her so far, she needs experience to back it up. Which Kristoff has in abundance.
And even if she had somehow made it to Elsa’s palace and got struck in the heart, she wouldn’t of known about the trolls without Kristoff… And without the trolls, she wouldn’t have known how to break her curse. She wouldn’t know where to go, how to get down and she probably would’ve frozen to death(for good) up there alone.
Romantic love is a sub plot of this film, we all know that. It comes second to the sisters’ bond.
But being the love interest is not all he’s good for. Without him, the story wouldn’t have gotten anywhere fast either.
Every single character had an important role.
^THIS
Not to mention without Kristoff Anna never would have thought about love in a new way. Even when Elsa told her you can’t marry a man you just met, Anna didn’t care. If you read books that are from Anna’s perspective, like A Frozen Heart and Anna’s Icy Adventure, when Kristoff started to fall for her, Anna started to see what true love was like. She started to question whether or not she really liked Hans, because how Kristoff was treating her and how she felt for him wasn’t like anything she experienced with Hans. Without Kristoff, Anna wouldn’t start to question what love really is, something that is vital to her character development.
As a sidenote: Kristoff is another great example of a feminist prince. What I mean by that is that he doesn’t overpower Anna, but he also isn’t weak. They are equals. He doesn’t force her to do anything she doesn’t want, he lets her make her own choices, and he isn’t constantly rescuing her. On the other hand, he isn’t some reversed damsel-in-distress who Anna is constantly saving. We need more guys both in real life and in media to be like him.

Film Dialogue from 2,000 screenplays, Broken Down by Gender and Age
We didn’t set out trying to prove anything, but rather compile real data. We framed it as a census rather than a study. So we Googled our way to 8,000 screenplays and matched each character’s lines to an actor. From there, we compiled the number of words spoken by male and female characters across roughly 2,000 films, arguably the largest undertaking of script analysis, ever.
@destinationtoast (if you haven’t seen it)
Thank you!! (H/T also to Lisa E., my non-Tumblr beta reader who also sent me this!)
This is an AMAZING data set. And a lot of the stuff I’ve been (very slowly) trying to do with my analysis of TV show appearances by gender is done beautifully – and with more detail and granularity – here. I am in awe!
(It’s also depressing af. But it’s really useful to have the actual data.)
Saw Suicide Squad! It was pretty good, perhaps off putting at times but otherwise interesting to see. I saw Batman VS Superman a while back and I would compare them to one and the same. If anything, seeing this made me excited for Justice League. Learning up on the characters backstories was probably the best part of the film. But the ending? I saw it coming halfway through
Since A Series of Unfortunate Events was given a second chance with a Netflix series after the terrible movie with Jim Carrey, I think it’s only fair that Percy Jackson/Heroes of Olympus gets a Netflix series after the two horrible book to film adaptations.
